Officers from the New Rochelle Police Department responded to the school on Tuesday, April 9, when there was a report of swastikas drawn inside the back of a textbook.
Last month, the school launched an investigation when the sign of hate was etched in a bathroom at Albert Leonard. Late last year, a four-inch swastika was found at the New Rochelle High School.
Police said that in the latest incident, a student reported to administrators finding the swastikas drawn in pencil on the textbook. The school district is currently cooperating with police investigators in an attempt to locate the culprit who drew the latest swastika.
In response to last month’s incident, the school district announced that it will be holding assemblies and lessons to “further develop a better understanding of the deep significance of such symbols and the harm caused by all acts that promote racism, discrimination, and exclusion.”
“The district’s Code of Conduct states that students may be subject to disciplinary action if they engage in conduct that endangers the safety, physical or mental health or welfare of others,” the district stated. “Anyone caught defacing school property anywhere in the district, particularly with signs of hate, will face significant consequences.”
